Organic and hybrid photovoltaics

Principal investigator: Joe BRISCOE

We have produced a variety of oxide thin films and nanostructures, particularly focussing on ZnO, for combination with either single organic absorbers to produce hybrid organic-inorganic device, or with organic blends to produce bulk heterojunction device by collaborators. Through the work on hybrid devices we demonstrated that the piezoelectric polarisation could be stimulated in zinc oxide nanorods using acoustic vibrations, which led to an increase in excited carrier lifetime via reduction of non-geminate recombination; the so-called "musical solar cells".
