Centre for Bioengineering

Industrial Links

SEMS Centre for Bioengineering is your gateway to collaborations with some of the best Biomedical Engineers Queen Mary has to offer. We have a track record for facilitating industry collaborations that translate the novel work of Queen Mary researchers into real-world applications.

With our collaborations we always aim for a partnership that is coherent and beneficial to all parties involved. Starting from the initial discussions, outlining the terms of the deal, to final execution and alliance management, we work closely with the Faculty of Science and Engineering’s Strategic Partnerships Team to streamline the establishment, implementation, and ongoing management of any and all collaborations.

Our Approach

Each collaboration is carefully crafted to maximise impact, where Queen Mary helps to guide its design, implementation, and evolution.

 Heading 1

GOALS OF THE PARTNERSHIP

Research collaborations with Queen Mary involve several technology focus areas and take many forms, including master research agreements, individual sponsored projects, and clinical trials. Collaborations can also focus more on education and training activities, making use of the talents of Queen Mary students.

 Heading 2

SPECIFIC AREAS OF RESEARCH & TRAINING WE SHOULD TARGET

After development of the initial plan, potential collaborators are invited to meet with our Centre Deputy for Industrial Engagement together with any collaboration-relevant researchers. These meetings help to refine and confirm a productive path forward from the onset.

 Heading 3

INVESTMENT AND DEAL TERMS THAT MAKE SENSE

The Corporate Partnerships team helps with the finalising of the project scope and establishes collaboration terms. All research collaborations are welcomed, from the small-scale partnerships all the way to the large-scale partnerships. Specific arrangements will only be made with mutual agreement between the industry collaborator and Queen Mary.

 Heading 4

LET’S GET THE WORK GOING

The Strategic Partnerships Team facilitates the university contracting process and oversees the implementation of governance and alliance management structures. Often, a Partnerships Manager is dedicated to the implementation and support of the project as an overseer.

 Heading 5

PROJECTS THAT CREATE VALUE

Our team remains involved throughout the lifespan of a contract to ensure a successful collaboration, managing any troubleshooting, modifications, and scope changes that may arise or present themselves as necessary.

 Heading 6

TECHNOLOGY LICENSING OPPORTUNITIES

Several of our research collaborations have resulted in the development of commercialise-able technologies. Typically, the sponsoring entity will be granted the opportunity to exercise its right to license the technology resulting from the collaboration.

 Heading 7

WHERE TO NEXT?

Queen Mary takes a long-term view of these collaborations, which evolve and grow as companies' priorities change and as the research evolves. We help to manage transitions and pivot, where appropriate.

Industrial Liaison Forum

The Industrial Liaison Forum provides an opportunity for students, academics and industrial links to interact and further Queen Mary’s strong position and reputation within the engineering and materials science sectors.
