In this multidisciplinary project, two electrochemical imaging techniques, light-addressable potentiometric sensors (LAPS) and scanning ion conductance microscopy (SICM), will be combined for the first time to create a novel instrument suitable for functional electrochemical imaging on both sides of a layer of cells. The release of reagents locally on the apical side while continuously imaging ion concentrations and cell impedance basally will provide us with new insights into the transport mechanisms through tissues with unprecedented detail and contribute to the understanding of physiological processes and disease mechanisms.
