QMUL / Islamic Development Bank PhD studentships for entry in 2021

The School of Engineering and Materials Science has been allocated a limited quota of QMUL / Islamic Development Bank PhD studentships for entry in Sep 2021. 

Step 1 - IDB Funding Application

Candidates must apply directly to the Islamic Development Bank PhD scholarship programme. Candidates must submit their Islamic Development Bank PhD scholarship application by the deadline on 28th February 2021.

Interested candidates are encouraged to make contact with a potential supervisor in SEMS before submitting their Islamic Development Bank PhD scholarship application –as staff will be able to offer assistance in composing a suitable research proposal.

Step 2 - QMUL PhD Application

Before applying you need to ensure that the School has expertise within the specific area to supervise your research. To do this, you should visit the School research web pages https://www.sems.qmul.ac.uk/research/ and review individual staff members' research interests for the following supervisors only: Dr Joe Briscoe, Dr Nader Karimi, Dr Hasan Shaheed, Dr Roberto Volpe & Professor Liz Tanner

If you are able to identify a match with your own research interests, the next step is to complete the online application process to an appropriate Engineering or Materials PhD programme:

Please remember to include a reference to the "QMUL / Islamic Development Bank PhD Studentships" and also the name of the Project/Supervisor to associate your application with this scheme.

Applicants are required to provide confirmation that they have applied to the Islamic Development Bank PhD Scholarship and also to provide a realistic plan to secure sufficient funding for the duration of the PhD programme.  On your application, please be sure to include details of how you intend to secure sufficient funding to complete the research programme and writing up process (£1,265 GBP per month, for a minimum duration of 36 months).

Applicant required to start studies in 2021. 

The minimum requirement for this studentship opportunity is a good Honours degree (minimum 2(i) honours or equivalent) or MSc/MRes in a relevant discipline.

If English is not your first language then you will require a valid English certificate equivalent to IELTS 6.5 and above (with a minimum score of 6.0 in Writing and 5.5 in each of the other test components).

The deadline for applicants to apply for study under this scheme is 28th February. Applications will be considered by the School’s Director of Graduate Studies. We plan to confirm the results of the chosen applicants via offer towards the end of March 2021.

Eligibility

  • The minimum requirement for this studentship opportunity is a good honours degree (minimum 2(i) honours or equivalent) or MSc/MRes in a relevant discipline.
  • If English is not your first language, you will require a valid English certificate equivalent to IELTS 6.5+ overall with a minimum score of 6.0 in Writing and 5.5 in all sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking).
  • Candidates are expected to start in (Semester ).
  • SEMS and Principal-funded studentships: this studentship arrangement covers home tuition fees and provides an annual stipend for up to three years (currently set at the 2023/24 stipend rate of £20,622 pa)
  • Note that Queen Mary Research Studentships cover home-rated tuition fees only (See: www.welfare.qmul.ac.uk/money/feestatus/ for details)
  • Overseas applicants would be required to meet the difference between home and international tuition fees
