PhD scholarship for an “Electrically Responsive Smart Material for Biomedical Soft Robotics

Supervisor: Majid TAGHAVI
Apply by:5 August 2025
Start in:September (Semester 1)

Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated candidate to undertake pioneering research on an electrically activated soft smart material for biomedical engineering applications. This is an ideal opportunity for those who want to leverage their materials or chemistry background in the fields of electromechanics and bioengineering and see its impact on improving quality of life. You will join a dynamic, multidisciplinary team within the School of Materials and Engineering Science at Queen Mary University of London, focusing on “Soft Robotic Transducers”, led by Dr Majid Taghavi, and will benefit from state-of-the-art facilities in the Advanced Robotics Centre.

Project Specifics

Your work will involve developing and characterising a range of smart polymeric materials, including hydrogels, and integrating them in a soft robotic system to achieve the desired electromechanical properties for specific biomedical needs. We seek candidates with a strong passion for interdisciplinary research, with a background in materials, chemistry, or any related discipline, and a solid understanding of mechanical and electrical engineering perspectives. You should be capable of working independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative team. Producing high-standard research, presenting your findings at leading scientific conferences, and publishing in high-impact journals are expected.
