PhD Research Studentships

Combining AI and Optics for Healthcare Applications

Supervisor: Lei SU
Apply by:31 January 2024
Start in:September (Semester 1)

Description

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning has been transforming human's ability to execute complex inference tasks using computers. In the field of photonics, deep learning has uncovered exciting applications in areas such as sensing, imaging, communication, and optical system designs. Meanwhile, AI and deep learning requires complex models and considerable computational time. Implementing learning and neural networks through all-optical circuits and devices provides a high-speed and low-energy-consumption alternative to the conventional approaches based on electronic circuits.

This project aims to develop deep-learning-based novel optical devices and systems for healthcare applications. The successful candidate will apply advanced machine learning and deep learning technologies to optical sensors and imaging devices. The project will be based on a close collaboration with local hospitals and industrial partners.

Funding

Funded by: China Scholarship Council
Candidate will need to secure a CSC scholarship.
Under the scheme, Queen Mary will provide scholarships to cover all tuition fees, whilst the CSC will provide living expenses and one return flight ticket to successful applicants.
