Development of sustainable lead-free ferroelectric ceramics for solid-state refrigeration
Supervisors: | Haixue YAN and Huasheng WANG |

Start in: | September (Semester 1) |
Description
The current intensive research on electrocaloric technology materials has been driven by the quest for environmentally friendly clean cooling technologies. The bottleneck for the development of such technologies is that electrocaloric materials is still too small a change in temperature that can be induced by the applied voltage, and current electrocaloric devices have a low coefficient of performance. To date, the best electrocaloric materials are based on lead-containing ferroelectric oxides. However, toxicity and environmental concerns have prompted the search for lead-free alternatives. High-entropy ferroelectrics show tailorable properties and potentially unprecedented performances, including excellent electrocaloric effect. Here, lead-free ferroelectrics are designed according to the high entropy concept in order to improve electrocaloric effect to enable the development of environmentally friendly cooling technologies.
