Rules and Expectations

Here are the Rules and Expectations for The Makerspace workshop and Machine shop. They are fully covered and explained in the Makerspace orientation. all users must sign a declaration saying they will uphold and follow them to the best of their ability, because ultimately they are in place for the safety of the user and others using the space.

  • The Makerspace is only open during supervised hours – normally Monday to Friday 9:00 – 13:00 and 14:00 – 17:00 Any changes or planned closures can be found on display on the doors or via the Makerspace website notices.
  • The Makerspace workshops (ENG-106/107) is a ‘Semi Supervised’ area and the Machine shop (ENG-111A) is a ‘Fully Supervised’ area.
  • All users will need to undergo the Makerspace orientation to gain access to the workshops and a further induction session for the Machine shop. Details for this can be found on the Makerspace website or speak with the supervising technician.
  • Only a maximum of 35 students are allowed in the Makerspace area at one time, there are 35 aprons, so if there are no aprons available then you will not be allowed to enter.
  • Safety Glasses, Steel toe boots and aprons must be worn in the Makerspace, and correct PPE must be worn at all times when using any machines (all PPE is supplied). No glasses, No apron, No boots = No entry.
  • Long hair should be tied back (new hair ties are supplied on request) and loose clothing should be removed or secured.
  • Food is not to be consumed in the workshop areas; however bottled water is acceptable but must be consumed outside the workshop. Please wash your hands before leaving the Makerspace area to avoid any contamination risks.
  • Headphones are NOT to be worn in any of the workshop areas unless working on digital audio projects.
  • Report any first aid issues or incidents to the technician on duty.
  • Tooling and materials are supplied for students building projects for SEMS modules. Please contact the SEMS technician for availability. Any students working on EECS or other non-SEMS projects should contact technicians in those schools for material availability.
  • Please report any damaged or faulty tooling/equipment to the technician supervising the area.
  • Power tools are available on request and need to be signed out by the user. Signed out equipment are the responsibility of the user and should be looked after and treated / used properly. Equipment that has been signed out needs to be signed back in after use or will result in a strike.
  • No tools or equipment are allowed to be taken out of the Makerspace suite. Misuse or abuse of the tools and equipment will result in a strike.
  • No personal items, including projects and personal materials can be stored in the Makerspace. However, if an item needs to ‘set’, “cure” or “dry” for example when gluing, please ask the supervising technician for permission to leave the item out. Items left out without permission may be thrown away or disassembled.
  • Please keep all personal items with you, there are pigeon-holes for the storage of your coat, bags & shoes, however, please be aware that these are not secure. We recommend using the shelving under the work benches for storing personal items during your stay.
  • Always clear your working area at the end of your session this includes both the workshop and machine room. Please put any tools away in the correct place and replace any unused or unwanted materials. Failure to do this may result in a warning or strike.
  • Use of the 3D printers, laser cutter, and other CNC equipment are part of a managed service run by the technicians, for advice or how to request use of the services, please speak to a supervising technician.
  • Dispose of refuse/waste in the correct place, if in doubt, ask.
  • You are asked to clear up 15 minutes before the end of your session, this is to allow for cleaning and clearing the workshops. For example, 16:45 for a 17:00 finish. In the event you do not pack down when prompted or push the boundaries, it will result in a warning or a strike.
  • The decision of the supervising technician is final, any unsafe behaviour will not be tolerated. Any repeated infringements of these rules will result in a strike, and you may be asked to leave the Makerspace.
  • We operate a three strikes system here in the Makerspace and getting three strikes will end up as an exclusion from all areas of the Makerspace. The user will need to re-do all H&S training to gain access back into the Makerspace and your supervisor or head of course will be notified as a result.

 Thank you for your cooperation.
