Makerspace Orientation & Induction Process

Before accessing The Makerspace, please make sure you have first completed the following before booking an orientation :

  • Complete the "SEMS Health & Safety" course on QM-Plus
    • Read the SEMS Health & Safety Handbook
    • General Safety induction and Quiz
    • SEMS Lab H&S induction and Quiz
  • Fire awareness training - Students Only [HS012] - Found under "General Induction for All Staff and Students" tab of the H&S course
  • First Aid for Lab workers training (Student only) training [HS042]  - Found under "Additional training for Lab users" tab of the H&S course
  • Safe Management of Laboratory Hazardous Waste (for UG's and PGTs) [HS024] - Found under "Additional training for Lab users" tab of the H&S course

You can access these courses on the QM-Plus training platform, here : https://qmplus.qmul.ac.uk/

  1. Log in using your QM credentials
  2. Under "Module Search" and type 'SEMS Health and Safety' - ensure that the 'all modules' tab is selected and select the course from the drop down.
  3. Enrol on the course and complete the relevant sections, as stated above.

When you have met the pre-requisites for the Makerspace access, please download your certificates (you will have 5 in total) in preparation for your orientation. Please book a Makerspace Orientation session via our Booking portal (see bookings section below).

Makerspace Bookings

You can now book a Makerspace service by either scanning or clicking the following QR code which will take you to our booking portal:

Here you can book the following services:

  • Orientation - basic access to the workshop space (ENG-106/107).
    • 1 hour session for up to 5 people, taking place at least 3 times a week (during term-time). Users can book up to 1 month in advance. All users must complete this before signing up for other services. Prerequisites for this remain the same (certificates for lab access as detailed above).
  • Machine shop induction - for access to the Machine shop (ENG-111A).
    • 3 hour session for up to 4 people. Taking place twice a week. Users can book this 1 month in advance. On completion you will be able to use the machine tools in the machine shop.
  • Project consultation - book a 1 hour slot with a Makerspace technician
    • This is a meeting to discuss your project needs or for general support relating to the Makerspace. Technicians can be selected via the available via a drop down menu when booking. This works around the technician schedules. Users can book this up to 3 weeks / 21 days in advance.
  • Society workshop (table booking) - users can book a table (5 available / half room) for the Wednesday afternoon session. Users can book these up to 2 months in advance. Please make sure that all Society workshop users must be orientated in order to access the workshop.
