About The School of Engineering and Materials Science
At Queen Mary University of London, we believe that a diversity of ideas helps us achieve the previously unthinkable.
Throughout its history, the School of Engineering and Materials Science (SEMS) has brought together pioneering minds from the scientific community to make significant impacts and advancements. We were the first in the UK to teach Aeronautical Engineering and the first to establish a Materials Science department – dedicated to the design, discovery and study of new materials.
In our research and collaboration with industry we make life-changing discoveries. The School is at the forefront of developing, harvesting and storing sustainable fuel energy sources, our organ-on-a-chip work provides an alternative to animal testing, and our robotics research take inspiration from nature to enhance patient safety and comfort.
As a School we sit at an exciting intersection. Led by our diverse and passionate academics, our rigorous scholastic approach and multidisciplinary research has the power to lengthen life spans, improve quality of life and combat some of the most serious challenges facing our planet. In doing so, we achieve the unthinkable – and prepare our students to do the same.
The School provides outstanding degree programmes coupled with internationally leading research which is reflected in all our undergraduate programmes. Our taught postgraduate programmes are similarly first class and provide students with a fantastic opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research in: Bioengineering, Intelligent Transport, Sustainable Engineering and Engineering and Materials Education. The skills developed by our students and our extensive industrial connections provide graduates with excellent employability in stimulating and well-paid careers.
Queen Mary University of London is a Russell Group university. We are ranked ninth in the UK for research and provide an attractive campus environment within the heart of London.
