Data-driven modelling for industrial decarbonisation

Supervisor: Xi JIANG
Apply by:29 January 2025
Start in:September (Semester 1)

Description

The project will use advanced computing and modelling to enable low-carbon technologies to interact intelligently with cement/steel production environments, transforming the industrial production landscape. It encompasses the development of new databases for zero-carbon thermal energy utilisation (e.g. using hydrogen and ammonia as alternative fuel), by performing systematic high-fidelity simulations of energy utilisation. The databases will be used to develop easy-to-use  machine learning models for predicting zero-carbon energy utilisation. The project might also consider carbon capture for removing emissions from the calcination reaction. Focussing on a ‘systems’ approach, the project outcomes from the data-driven holistic approach will maximise the chance of successfully achieving low-carbon, low-cost and high-efficiency cement/steel manufacturing.

Funding

Funded by: China Scholarship Council
Candidate will need to secure a CSC scholarship.
Under the scheme, Queen Mary will provide scholarships to cover all tuition fees, whilst the CSC will provide living expenses and one return flight ticket to successful applicants.
