Next-Generation Structural Epoxy Vitrimers for Circular Manufacturing and Extended Service Life

Description
High-performance epoxy resins are widely used in aerospace, automotive and energy applications because of their outstanding stiffness, strength and environmental resistance. However, their highly crosslinked nature limits repairability and recyclability, leading to significant sustainability challenges. This PhD will investigate and develop a new generation of high-performance epoxy vitrimers that combine the mechanical performance of conventional structural thermosets with the ability to be repaired, reprocessed and reused. The project will investigate dynamic epoxy networks toughened using rubber particles and nano-silica, with a particular focus on understanding how repeated loading, damage, repair and reprocessing affect material performance. Through a combination of materials synthesis, thermo-mechanical characterisation, fracture testing and microstructural analysis, the student will establish the mechanisms governing toughness, fatigue resistance, long-term durability and recyclability in vitrimer systems. The outcomes will provide critical insight into the design of sustainable structural polymers capable of maintaining high performance throughout multiple service and repair cycles.

- The minimum requirement for this studentship opportunity is a good honours degree (minimum 2(i) honours or equivalent) or MSc/MRes in a relevant discipline.
- If English is not your first language, you will require a valid English certificate equivalent to IELTS 6.5+ overall with a minimum score of minimum score of 6.0 in each of Writing, Listening, Reading and Speaking).
- Note for EPSRC studentships; these studentships are open to those with Home fee status; according to the EPSRC terms and conditions.
- Candidates are expected to start in January (Semester 2).
