Fluid Structure Interaction and Marine Structural Design for Offshore Aquaculture Systems

Description

This fully funded PhD studentship is supported by Lloyd's Register Foundation and is open to applicants eligible for Home fee status. The project forms part of the international programme Safe and Sustainable Offshore Aquaculture: Advancing Reliability, Renewable Integration, and Training for Global Impact, bringing together leading universities and industrial partners from the UK, Norway, Greece, India and China. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary research team and work closely with world leading offshore aquaculture company AKVA Group (Norway) and marine engineering company Griffon Marine (UK), gaining direct exposure to real engineering challenges and industry practice.

The research will focus on the hydrodynamic and structural behaviour of offshore aquaculture infrastructure exposed to waves, currents and extreme environmental loading. The student will undertake high fidelity computational fluid dynamics and fluid structure interaction simulations, supported by structural analysis and, where required, experimental validation. The project offers excellent opportunities for industrial engagement, international collaboration, conference participation and research visits, while contributing to the development of safer and more resilient offshore aquaculture systems.

Home applicants only for 2026/7, the QMUL stipend rate is £22,618 p.a.

Eligibility

  • The minimum requirement for this studentship opportunity is a good honours degree (minimum 2(i) honours or equivalent) or MSc/MRes in a relevant discipline.
  • If English is not your first language, you will require a valid English certificate equivalent to IELTS 6.5+ overall with a minimum score of minimum score of 6.0 in each of Writing, Listening, Reading and Speaking).
  • Note for EPSRC studentships; these studentships are open to those with Home fee status; according to the EPSRC terms and conditions.
  • Candidates are expected to start in September (Semester 1).
