PhD Research Studentships

Sustainability, Environmental Engineering & Healthy Infrastructure

Supervisor: Eldad AVITAL
Apply by:28 January 2026
Start in:September (Semester 1)

Description

Queen Mary University of London invites applications for a China Scholarship Council (CSC)–supported PhD under the supervision of Dr Eldad Avital. The studentship offers a choice of two research themes contributing to global sustainability, public health, and environmentally responsible engineering.

Track 1: Sustainable Water Management and Environmental Flows

This project investigates innovative engineering solutions to improve river water management, treatment efficiency and environmental resilience in urban and low-resource settings. The research will use computational modelling to study flow behaviour, pollutant transport and system optimisation for sustainable water management. This theme suits applicants interested in environmental fluid mechanics, water resources engineering, climate adaptation, and sustainable infrastructure development.

Track 2: Air Quality and Healthy Sustainable Buildings

This project focuses on improving indoor air quality through better airflow design, low-energy ventilation and environmentally responsible indoor environmental quality strategies. Using advanced fluid dynamics simulations and experimental validation/literature dataset, the research will support the design of healthier and more sustainable indoor environment. This theme suits candidates motivated by public-health engineering, the built environment, and climate-positive solutions for future cities.

Funding

Funded by: China Scholarship Council
Candidate will need to secure a CSC scholarship.
Under the scheme, Queen Mary will provide scholarships to cover all tuition fees, whilst the CSC will provide living expenses and one return flight ticket to successful applicants.
