PhD Studentship: Interstitial Hydrides of High-Entropy Alloys

The proposed project will directly contribute to tackling the world’s greatest challenge, i.e. green energy revolution countering climate change.

Hydrogen has long been viewed as a desirable green fuel and its technology just received a major boost from the UK government; it can be produced in a carbon-free manner and its oxidation only results in water, but its safe and viable storage remains a huge challenge. This scholarship is aimed at filling this gap.

The successful candidate will develop and study new high-entropy alloy materials, i.e. a new class of metal alloys in which at least four different metals are mixed on the atomic scale, for hydrogen storage. The successful candidate will be involved in research to find new ways to produce this new class of high-entropy alloys using solid-state techniques. The materials produced will be able to reversibly store large amounts of hydrogen and they will be used to gain fundamental insights into processes such as strain effects and their impact on hydrogen storage, using advanced characterisation techniques such as neutron and X-ray spectroscopies at large-scale facilities in the UK and in France.

The proposed PhD will have a collaboration with the Institute of Chemistry and Physics of Materials (Paris) of the CNRS at its heart and the successful candidate will be required to spend a minimum of 6 months in France in the course of their PhD.

PhD Research Studentship Details

To be eligible for a full award (stipend and fees) applicants should note the award is: 

  • Available only to UK and French applicants with Home Fee Status. (See: http://www.welfare.qmul.ac.uk/money/feestatus/ for details) 
  • Full Time programme only.
  • Starting in September 2021.
  • Comprised of a studentship arrangement that will cover tuition fees and provide an annual stipend for up to three years (Currently set for 2021/22 as £17,609).
  • Subject to a minimum requirement of a good Honours degree (minimum 2(i) honours or equivalent) or MSc/MRes in a relevant discipline.
  • Subject to English language proficiency - if English is not your first language you will require a valid English certificate equivalent to IELTS 6.5+ overall with a minimum score of 6.0 in Writing and 5.5 in all sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking).
