Electrostatic jetting for high definition printing

Supervisor: Ahmed ISMAIL
Apply by:28 February 2020

Description

If we apply high enough voltage difference to a liquid coming out of a nozzle, the liquid will deform into a cone shape and a fine jet, much smaller than the nozzle in size will be produced in what we call electrostatic jetting. If we maintain a stable cone jet mode, we can print a continuous pattern. We also can print small droplets simply by using a pulsating mode. Much smaller features from wide range of liquid viscosities can be printed by using this technique in comparison with the traditional Inkjet printing.

In this project we will study the effect of the electric field on the jet and the drop during the printing and shed the light on the underlying physics of this process in order to improve the quality of the printing. The aim is to develop physical models that capable of predicting the behaviour in such small-scale flow and then use these models to develop new techniques for the printing of functional materials among other applications.

The ideal candidate should have:
A minimum of 2:1 undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or a related discipline;
Strong background in fluid dynamics and applied physics;
Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, along with a stated interest in interdisciplinary research;
Some basic programing skills.

This opportunity is for a highly motivated person who is willing to dedicate his/her full time to do experimental and theoretical work and has passion toward learning new things and conducting scientific research.

Applications will be reviewed upon receipt; early application is strongly encouraged.
