Experimental study into the efficiency of vertical axis wind turbines
| Supervisor: | Neil CAGNEY |
| Apply by: | 7 July 2019 |
Description
The majority of wind turbines in operation use a horizontal axis configuration (in which the axis of rotation points in the wind direction); however, vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) have many potential benefits over convectional designs, including cheaper installation and maintenance and improved performance in regions where the direction and strength of wind is variable. While the efficiency of convectional designs can decrease dramatically when placed near other turbines (e.g. in a wind farm), this can lead to an increase in the efficiency of VAWTs.
The aim of this project is to explore how the proximity of neighbouring vertical axis wind turbines can be used to optimise efficiency. The work will involve designing and performing experiments in a wind tunnel.
