Tsu May Lim: contributing to a sustainable future Tsu May Lim at canalside on her graduation day

Tsu May graduated in 2019 with an MEng in Sustainable Energy Engineering. After working as an engineering in 3D printing, she is now a decarbonisation and sustainability professional in Singapore - working with companies to reduce their carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions.

Preparation for my career

My degree directly led to my current role as I work for a decarbonisation solutions provider, focusing on environmental attribute commodities, power purchase agreements and carbon mitigation projects developments in the Asia Pacific region.

Queen Mary provided me with invaluable exposure to climate change solutions before they became a global focal point. The program offered a deep-dive into areas such as lifecycle analysis, electricity markets and sustainable cities—topics that were ahead of the curve.

But while the theories were essential, the real value came from the hands-on experiences: the friendships I built, the independence I gained as an international student from Asia and the opportunity to grow both academically and personally.

Looking back, the lessons I learned at QMUL continue to shape my approach to problem-solving, innovation and leadership in the sustainability sector.

Cross-cultural conversations

Looking back, my fondest memories revolve around the friendships I formed during my time at university. The cross-cultural conversations we had during lunch at The Curve, discussing future career plans and solving assignments together. These moments were a blend of intense learning and personal connection which shaped my approach to communications and teamwork. Some of the friendships I made during this time have lasted to this day and have been incredibly rewarding.

A constant source of inspiration

Living in London was the major highlight. The city’s energy, diversity and cultural richness were a constant source of inspiration. Residing and studying in such a dynamic city was such a privilege which I owe to my parents. There was never a dull moment and weekends were spent exploring parks and different neighbourhoods. London became my second home and the opportunities to experience its vibe not only enriched my academic life but also broadened my horizons in ways I could never have imagined.

Contributing to a sustainable future

As I reflect on my career so far, my proudest achievement is being able to take on different roles. I started out in the 3D Printing industry diving into the nitty gritty of the additive manufacturing processes and materials, and now I am a Business Development Manager at a environmental commodities and carbon projects firm supporting corporates with decarbonisation strategies and implementation. The entire journey has been both challenging and incredibly rewarding, as it allows me to contribute to impactful solutions for a sustainable future. It’s a culmination of my academic foundation and the real-world exposure that I gained during my time at university.
