Ahmad: an internship in Aviation analytics An iconic London location

Ahmad Aamir Randhawa is an undergraduate student studying Aerospace Engineering. In 2025 he secured an internship with insurance company Tokio Marine Kiln as an Aviation Underwriting and Analytics Intern. He tells us about his experience.

I first became aware of the internship opportunity through a targeted job board for industry-specific roles and was drawn to it due to my academic background in economics and data analytics, as well as my strong interest in the aviation and insurance sectors. After tailoring my resume to highlight my relevant coursework and previous experience with data analysis, I successfully passed the initial screening and participated in an  interview where I was able to demonstrate my analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Using AI in data processing

During this internship I gained valuable insights into the intricacies of aviation underwriting and pricing, with a particular focus on how large language models (LLMs) and AI can be leveraged to manage and process sensitive data. This was particularly useful as I worked on developing solutions for processing and structuring unstructured data, such as historical pricing models, customer data, and market trends. Through this experience, I not only sharpened my understanding of risk assessment but also gained practical experience using AI-driven tools to automate data processing tasks, which greatly enhanced my efficiency in handling large-scale datasets.

A desk with a view Given a challenge

A significant portion of my work involved analysing historical data related to airline and real estate premium pricing, which required managing over 2,000 files in diverse formats. I was tasked with creating a standardized system to handle these files, which was a complex yet rewarding challenge. This experience allowed me to refine my skills in data cleaning, transformation, and integration, and I learned how to build a robust system for managing large data transactions. Additionally, I worked closely with senior underwriters to assess various pricing models, which provided me with a deep understanding of how data-driven decisions are made in the underwriting process.

Strengthening my communication

The internship also helped me strengthen my communication skills, as I regularly presented my findings to teams and collaborated with colleagues across different departments to develop actionable insights. Overall, this internship not only provided me with valuable exposure to the aviation underwriting and pricing industry but also significantly enhanced my technical and analytical abilities, laying a strong foundation for my future career in data analytics and finance.
