Dr Rehan Shah's article on sustainability in mathematics featured in IMA flagship magazine
25 February 2025

Dr Rehan Shah's article titled 'Sustainability in Mathematics Problems? You Must Be Joking' has been featured in the February 2025 issue of the Institute of Mathematics's (IMA) flagship monthly magazine publication Mathematics Today., following its shortlisting for the IMA's Graham Hoare Prize.
The article, aimed at academics and educators at all levels in higher education, is intended to serve as reference guide for the effective and systematic integration of sustainability into university mathematics curricula. In addition to outlining some best-practice principles for integrating sustainability in mathematics, Dr Shah also provides specific examples of three mathematical problems that he has personally implemented within his own first-year undergraduate mathematics module in SEMS.
As part of the peer review process, the reviewers highly recommended the publication of the article by noting "This is a very engaging article and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. As someone who teaches mathematics at university level, it has prompted me to look at some of the examples inspired from Dr Shah's 'ethics in mathematics' toolkit - Chiodo, Muller and Shah (2025) to see if I can adapt them and use them in some of my classes".
The article represents one of the many forms of impact dissemination of Dr Shah's ongoing work on embedding ethics and sustainability in mathematics modules at QMUL with his SEMS undergraduate student researchers Ms. Malmi Mahagamage and Ms. Meherun Soud.
