A group of 3rd and 4th year aerospace and mechanical engineering undergraduate students presented their project in person at the AIAA SciTech Conference in Orlando this January. Their participation followed their first-place win at the AIAA Regional Student Conference, held in Melbourne, Australia, last November. The visit was jointly supported by the AIAA and the British Council.

The students showcased their latest aerodynamic and structural design and analysis of a small horizontal-axis wind turbine designed for urban and rural small-scale users. Their presentation was well received by the audience of industry professionals, including a school graduate now working in the aerospace sector. The students also attended special events designed to foster connections with peers from other universities and aerospace professionals. This exciting experience concluded with an organised visit to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral.

The students are Hardit Saini, Milcha Maresha, Andrews N Agyei, Ramia Rahman, Omar Abdi, Aamna Abbasi and Imad Foughali. Their paper can be found on the Aerospace Research Central website.

The students’ project is part of a larger initiative supported by the British Council (UKIERI) and conducted in collaboration with Indian universities VIT Chennai and IIT Madras, with in-kind support from Deutsche WindGuard India. The project aims to develop a range of wind energy solutions to supply electricity and water for small-scale users in urban and rural environments. The research is supervised by Dr Eldad Avital and co-supervised by Dr Ranjan Vepa, Dr Neil Cagney, and Dr Mouna Chetehouna from Queen Mary University of London School of Engineering and Materials Science.
