Research Paper Wins Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) Pfeil Award 2023
5 June 2023

Congratulations to Shafique Ahmed and his co-authors: Chunxiao Song, Jiyue Wu, Bo Li and Haixue Yan on their research paper, "Temperature dependence in ageing process in commercial zirconia dental ceramics" which has received the esteemed IOM3 Pfeil Award. This recognition acknowledges the paper's merit and its significant contributions to the field.
The research sheds light on the behaviour of zirconia dental ceramics under low temperature degradation and highlights their suitability for dental applications, making remarkable strides in the field of ceramic materials.
The study's primary objective was to investigate the phenomenon of low temperature degradation (LTD) in zirconia dental ceramics, a critical factor influencing the material's long-term performance and reliability. The research findings revealed an important characteristic of zirconia dental ceramics—resistance to low temperature degradation at temperatures above 37°C (human body temperature) and below 134°C (normal testing temperature). These results hold substantial implications for the practical use of zirconia ceramics in dentistry, ensuring their enduring stability and performance in dental restorations, such as crowns and bridges.
