Abstract:
NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a 6.6m diameter, segmented telescope for cryogenic, infrared astronomy that was launched in December 2021. In addition to other objectives, JWST will provide the first observations of the earliest, luminous objects in the Universe and characterize exoplanets. In this qualitative talk for students, we discuss the mission and aspects of its construction and ground testing, focusing on interesting challenges in applied optics.
