PhD success for Jiazhe Zhao
29 July 2026

Congratulations to Jiazhe Zhao for successfully passing her PhD viva with her thesis entitled "3D Photoelectrochemical Imaging".
Jiazhe completed her work as a member of the Electrochemical Sensors group in the School of Engineering and Materials Science at Queen Mary University of London and was supervised by Steffi Krause and Joe Briscoe.
In her PhD, Jiazhe pioneered the first imaging technique that can be used for mapping electrochemical reactions in a 3D porous structure. Potential applications of this technique include the recording of electrochemical activity in electrocatalysts in three dimensions or functional imaging in 3D tissue culture.
Jiazhe presented her work at five international conferences, including the 248th Meeting of The Electrochemical Society, and one national one. She received the Best Oral Presentation Award at the 39th Topical Meeting of the International Society of Electrochemistry.
She is currently preparing a publication to disseminate her novel imaging platform to the wider scientific community.
