Dr Rehan Shah and SEMS students group disseminate research at Festival of Education

Dr Rehan Shah, along with his entire research group comprising seven undergraduate Engineering students showcased their work from six ongoing collaborative education research projects at the Queen Mary Festival of Education held on Tuesday 10th June 2025 at the People's Palace.

The scholarship projects led by Dr Shah included a diverse range of research topics that comprised:

1. 'Making Diversity Count': Empowering students through co-creation of inclusive STEM curricula: with student researcher - Ms. Ava Dahlia Belfafonte (winner of Best Innovation Poster at 2024 Festival of Education)

2. Cross-National Development of a Competency-Oriented Assessment Instrument in Engineering Mathematics: with student researcher - Mr Ilanthiraiyan Sivagnanamoorthy and Dr Alexandra Werth (Cornell University)

3. Embedding Ethics and Sustainability in Mathematics Modules: with student researchers - Ms. Malmi Mahagamage and Ms. Meherun Soud

4. From Classroom to Community: 'Engineering Meets History': (with student researchers - Ms. Malmi Mahagamage, Ms. Meherun Soud and Mr Yash Vaghela and Dr Jack Hayes (Brunel Museum) (funded by QMUL Centre of Public Engagement Grant)

5. Student Researchers Breaking Barriers: Exploring how STEM can drive Education for Sustainability in UK HE: with student researchers Ms. Nicole Kirk and Ms. Jessie Wong (UCL) and Dr Anne Preston (UCL) (funded by Association of Commonwealth Universities HE Sustainability Grant)

6. 'Squashing Bugs, Not Snakes': Co-creating a Python toolkit to develop students' programming proficiency: with student researchers Mr Muhie Al Haimus, Mr Yash Vaghela and Mr Ilanthiraiyan Sivagnanamoorthy (part of AI Keynote World Cafe Session on Assessment and Feedback for 2025 Festival of Education)

All of the projects were extremely well received by academic colleagues as well educational developers from Queen Mary Academy, with the insightful talks and discussions sparking great potential for future cross-disciplinary collaborations across the university.

Dr Shah was extremely grateful to all his students for their painstaking contributions, stating that "the students with their enthusiasm and commitment emerged as the true highlight" in the promotion and dissemination of the impact of these projects.
