Professor Liz Tanner Appointed Chair of IoM3 Biomedical Applications Group
30 May 2025

Professor Liz Tanner has been appointed Chair of the Biomedical Applications Group (BMAG) of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IoM3), which accredits the SEMS Materials Science and Engineering degrees in both London and Xi’an. As one of IoM3’s Technical Groups, this role also grants Liz membership of the IoM3 Advisory Council.
Liz plans to strengthen collaboration between BMAG and other IoM3 Technical Groups - something already underway, as she joins fellow group chairs Professor James Busfield (Elastomers Group) and Professor Paul Hogg (Composites Group), who was Head of QMUL Materials in the 2000s.
Previously, Liz served as the liaison between the Biomedical Engineering Division of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE-BMED) and IoM3. In her role as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Engineering in Medicine, she remains active on the IMechE-BMED board. She now aims to reinforce ties between these two professional bodies, highlighting the interdisciplinary strength of biomedical engineering - especially in biomaterials.
Looking ahead, Liz is keen to deepen connections with the UK Society for Biomaterials and the European Society for Biomaterials, two leading research-focused organisations in the field.
“I’m looking forward to building links within IoM3 and beyond, to benefit the UK’s biomedical applications of biomaterials,” she said.
