Dr Rehan Shah, in collaboration with his QMUL undergraduate student researcher Mr Ilanthiraiyan Sivagnanamoorthy and external colleagues from Ireland, Dr Diarmaid Hyland (Maynooth University) and Dr Sinead Breen (Dublin City University) (authors and developers of the Function Concept Inventory and the Algebra Concept Inventory) hosted a UK-wide one-day in-person workshop at QMUL on Thu 27 May 2025, titled 'Designing proficiency-oriented assessment inventories in undergraduate mathematics' as part of an Interdisciplinary Collaboration grant funded by the London Mathematical Society (LMS).

The workshop consisted of 2 sessions, involving a mix of theoretical discussions and background on concept inventories in mathematics led by Dr Hyland and Dr Breen, and an engaging, practical, interactive assessment design task led by Dr Shah and his student Ilan. The event was an overwhelming success and received extremely positive feedback from all of its 25 academic and educator participants, both from within QMUL and externally from a diverse range of UK universities.

Feedback from the attendees included the following:

  • "I just wanted to thank you for the invitation to this event! It was very insightful and informative."
  • "I can see myself thinking about these things in the future and even now while tutoring school pupils!
  • "Thank you for giving me the chance to participate in this unique opportunity!"

The insights from the workshop will help inform Dr Shah's large ongoing project focusing on the development of a cross-national mathematical reasoning skills assessment inventory for applied mathe…, in collaboration with Dr Alexandra Werth (Cornell University) and will also be disseminated to the wider community in its preparatory stages through internal and external channels.
