At the AdvanceHE Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Conference 2025, held on the 2nd of April, Dr Mouna Chetehouna from CRÈME represented Queen Mary University of London, promoting the institution’s inclusive and equitable education culture on a national stage. Her presentation highlighted a unique educational approach developed within the School of Engineering and Materials Science (SEMS), aligned with Queen Mary’s 2030 Strategy, and its commitment to widening participation, academic excellence, and global impact.

The approach blends a range of pedagogical methods including inclusive learning design, sustainability-focused research, and experiential learning centred on global and societal challenges to support an equitable and applied educational experience. It was implemented within a UKIERI-funded renewable energy project, intentionally structured to address six United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Quality Education (SDG 4), Gender Equality (SDG 5), Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7), Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), and Climate Action (SDG 13). Within this framework, a diverse group of students was able to meaningfully engage with real-world wind energy issues while developing critical skills in collaboration, leadership, and dissemination. Guided by the principles of Queen Mary’s Strategy, the initiative positioned students as active contributors to global change, instilling a strong sense of citizenship alongside academic development.

Dr Eldad Avital who co-authored the presentation, highlighted the achievements of the participating students. This includes peer-reviewed publications and award-winning conference presentations in wind energy, showcasing the educational model’s effectiveness in supporting both student success and meaningful global impact. The presentation stood as a testament to Queen Mary’s commitment to shaping the next generation of socially responsible scientists and engineers ready to lead with purpose driving meaningful global change.
