Five representative students of Queen Mary Centre for Undergraduate Research (QMCUR) participated in the prestigious British Conference of Undergraduate Research (BCUR), marking QMCUR’s second presence at this national event.

The conference, held at Newcastle University on 9–10 April, hosted over 300 students from across the UK and abroad, including participants from the US, Canada, UAE, Ghana, and other countries, showcasing high-quality research through 220 oral presentations and 73 posters.

QMCUR students upheld the high standard of the event, presenting the following research projects:

  • Ilanthiraiyan Sivagnanamoorthy (3rd Year Aerospace Engineering): "Cross-National Development of a Competency-Oriented Assessment Instrument in Engineering Mathematics”, Oral Presentation. (Supervisor: Dr Rehan Shah).
  • Kiane Johnson (3rd Year Biomedical Engineering): "Predicting Atrial Fibrilllation Treatment Outcomes with Digital Twins", Poster. (Supervisors: Dr Alexander Zolotarev, Dr Caroline Roney).
  • David Dennis Buck (2nd Year Aerospace Engineering: “Felixstowe’s Transformation: The Industrial and Regional Evolution of a Port City (1960-2024)”, Oral Presentation. (Supervisor: Dr Jae-Hwan Park).
  • Ava Dahlia Belafonte (3rd Year Mechanical Engineering): “Making Diversity ‘Count’: Empowering Students through Co-creation of Inclusive STEM Curricula”, Oral Presentation. (Supervisor: Dr Rehan Shah).
  • Fasika Bekele (3rd Year Chemical Engineering): “Sustainable Production of Living Microalgal Paint”, Oral Presentation + Poster. (Supervisor: Dr Jincheng Wu).

Their performance demonstrated confidence, maturity, and high professionalism throughout the conference sessions. Notably, the contributions of the 3rd Year students were not based on their final-year project, as most of the research presented at BCUR, an achievement that deserves special recognition.

The conference was also an occasion for networking, discussing the research projects, and reflecting on current achievements and future planning. Some students are already preparing to continue their research and take part to other conferences in the coming months, under the continuous support of their supervisors and QMCUR.
