Dr Rehan Shah has been awarded an Inclusion and Diversity grant by the London Mathematical Society (LMS) and the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research for organising a one-day diversity showcase event in July 2025 for the newly launched Levelling Up Mathematics for Engineering programme due to start in March 2025, which he is spearheading as the academic lead, in conjunction with Michael Woolley (Outreach and Recruitment Manager).

The proposed event will be held in collaboration with the School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS) and will bring together SEMS and SMS undergraduate student tutors with participating Year 12 and 13 A-Level school students and QMUL academic and professional services colleagues involved in the Levelling Up Maths programmes from both schools. It will be aimed at inspiring A-Level school students from diverse backgrounds (female and Black students) to continue with studying mathematics and related STEM disciplines (physics, engineering, etc.) at university level, aligning with the school's EDI priorities, to motivate more women to study engineering and related STEM disciplines at university.

The programme will also feature two specially invited external guest speakers who are successful Black and female mathematicians with academic and professional experiences. These guests will give outreach-focused talks reflecting on their own personal journeys and experiences of pursuing mathematics to inspire and motivate female and Black school students to consider studying mathematics at university level.
