Dr Rehan Shah speaks at the UK History for Diversity in Mathematics Network
19 September 2024
Dr Rehan Shah was specially invited to deliver a session talk for a workshop organised by the UK History for Diversity in Mathematics Network at the University of Manchester to report on the outcomes and findings from his Queen Mary project on 'Making Diversity Count: empowering students through co-creation of inclusive mathematics curricula'.
The project focused on the diversification of the existing first and second-year undergraduate mathematics modules within SEMS through co-creation (with SEMS undergraduate student researcher Ava Dahlia Belafonte) and embedding of historical and modern biographical profiles of under-represented mathematicians, scientists and engineers. The project aims to increase QMUL students’ awareness of diverse representation within STEM disciplines and to present them with inspiring examples of both historic and current professionals to serve as positive role models.
Dr Shah's talk showcased evaluation results and feedback gathered from students following the pilot implementation of these resources in his modules in the past year. The session was well received by colleagues from various UK and Irish universities, keen to develop and test similar resources within their own institutions.
Delivered in conjunction with Dr Shah's collaborator Dr Brigitte Stenhouse from The Open University, the talk also highlighted similar co-created historical resources developed by The Open University, which will be evaluated along with the QMUL resources, through upcoming joint student focus groups held at QMUL, supported by a funding grant received by Dr Shah from the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.
The project resources are featured on the Education Resources section of the SEMS EDI website and the SEMS EDI QMPlus course page for academic staff to make use of within their own modules.
