Cockpits and Connections: my unforgettable day at Farnborough

The Farnborough International Airshow is a place where aviation dreams come true, engines roar like lions, and where yours truly got to play pilot for a day. As an international student passionate about aerospace, this was my chance to meet the industry’s elite and maybe snag a career tip along the way.

The F35: A Jet That Needs No Introduction

Imagine this: I step onto the airfield, and my ears are immediately hijacked by the thunderous roar of the F35. It’s loud, proud, and everything you expect from a jet that looks like a superhero's vehicle. As it zoomed past, stealing everyone's attention I couldn't help but think, "That’s the sound of my student loans disappearing...if only I could pilot one of these!"

My Eurofighter Typhoon Moment

I’ve always dreamed of piloting a fighter jet, and here was my golden opportunity. Climbing into the cockpit, I half expected to hear the Top Gun anthem. Instead, I heard my inner monologue: "Don’t touch anything that might eject you." Seated in this engineering marvel, I realized two things: the cockpit is not built for my long legs, and this is where dreams are made. Imagining myself as Maverick for those few minutes, I couldn't help but grin like a Cheshire cat.

Mingling with the Big Guns

The Real Fuel of Success What’s a trip to an airshow without professional mingling? BAE Systems, the wizards behind many flying wonders. I was lucky enough to meet their professionals, who kindly shared insights and career advice. The cherry on top? Meeting Becky, a HR at GKN Aerospace. I approached her with my best only to hear, “Hey, I know you from LinkedIn!” It felt like being recognized by a celebrity, and I was practically floating. Becky's advice was pure gold, giving me hope that even international students can break into the big leagues like GKN Aerospace. A simple LinkedIn message led to such an uplifting moment.

Reflections on a Sky-High Experience

Leaving Farnborough, I felt like I’d been on an aviation rollercoaster and loved every second of it. The airshow wasn't just about cool jets and noise; it was about meeting inspiring people, learning from the best, and seeing my aspirations take flight. This experience gave me wings. As I waved goodbye to the jets and new friends, I knew my journey in aerospace was just taking off.
