Title: Improving student engagement: Reflections on my experiences
Abstract: When I joined SEMS, the low engagement by students during my lectures caught me off guard. Half of the 120 students who turned up to the first lecture had disappeared by the very next lecture and, by the second half of the semester, attendance was as low as 20%. I have therefore attempted several different strategies (with varying levels of success) to try to see what might be effective in improving engagement. During the webinar, I will provide an overview of these initiatives and my reflections, to promote discussion of how, with increasingly limited resource, we might be able to foster an atmosphere where students across all our programmes actively want to get involved in all learning opportunities that we provide.
Bio: Kshitij Sabnis is a Lecturer in Aerospace Engineering, who joined SEMS from the University of Cambridge in September 2023. His research in experimental aerodynamics makes use of the wind tunnel facilities in SEMS and is aligned with the modules he teaches in fluid dynamics and high-speed aerodynamics.
