Several Engineering Management MSc students attended a networking reception on 13 November at Club Quarters, Trafalgar Square, as part of the Explort postgraduate exploratory mission to London, organised by the Walloon Export and Foreign Investment Agency (AWEX).

AWEX is the public organisation responsible for promoting international trade and attracting foreign investment to the Wallonia region of Belgium.

The reception brought together postgraduate students, international delegates, and industry professionals. Our students engaged actively with participants from Belgium, gaining insights into European academic pathways, international career trends, and the wider landscape of global trade and investment. The event also provided opportunities to connect classroom learning, such as regulatory alignment, post-Brexit trade dynamics, and export-support mechanisms, with real-world professional practice.

Students reported highly positive experiences and highlighted the supportive role of Dr Jae-Hwan Park, who facilitated introductions and encouraged meaningful discussions throughout the evening. Selected student reflections include:

Student 1:
“The event helped us better understand Belgium’s job market and career opportunities, and the interactions with business experts were particularly valuable. Dr Park’s encouragement made networking both comfortable and engaging.”

Student 2:
“Speaking with Belgian postgraduate students offered a useful comparative perspective on European academic and career pathways. Conversations with industry experts deepened my understanding of post-Brexit trade realities, regulatory frameworks, and cross-border supply chain challenges.”

Student 3:
“I learned a great deal about different academic journeys and cultural perspectives. The event was inspiring and significantly expanded my professional network.”

Overall, the reception provided a valuable opportunity for students to enhance their global awareness, communication skills, and confidence in international professional settings. The School of Engineering and Materials Science looks forward to supporting further high-impact international engagement opportunities.
