Airbus Engineer Inspires Aerospace Students with Insightful Guest Lecture
11 October 2025

Aerospace Engineering students were treated to an inspiring guest lecture on Friday 10th October, by Dr Giel Cohen, Head of Department at Airbus Spain and a Queen Mary alumn.
Dr Cohen, who completed his PhD in High-Speed Experimental Aerodynamics at Queen Mary in 2003, delivered an engaging talk on aircraft certification and field testing as part of the third-year module in Conceptual Design of Aircraft.
The session covered standards of design and flight, take-off and landing procedures, and mission planning, complemented by video demonstrations of Airbus aircraft, including the A400M performing a landing on a demanding runway.
The lecture attracted a large audience of students from across all years, who showed enthusiasm and engaged actively during and after the talk.
This was the first in a series of guest lectures featuring leading professionals. Future talks will explore the impact of pandemics on aviation (Week 5) and simulation in aerospace and CEng recognition procedures (Week 6).
