The research, Hypertension's Hidden Hand, which you can find out more about in a previous news story, looks at how arterial vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) play a central role in the onset and progression of atherosclerosis. Pamela's ground breaking research shows that hypertensive pressure transforms arterial vascular smooth muscle cells into lipid filled foam cells, amongst others demonstrated by using Raman spectroscopy.
