Asa Barber and Fei Hang's work that shows that bone gets its strength from a combination of tiny fibres that either stiffen or become more malleable when stretched is discussed in the New Scientist. It is hoped these findings by scientists at Queen Mary will lead to greater development in treatments for osteoporosis. Dr Barber is quoted as saying: “The presence of collagen fibres with different mechanical properties within bone helps to increase its ability to absorb energy, and makes it such an effective and tough material.”
