Engineering and Women's Health

Michelle Oyen is a global leader in bioengineering and women’s health. She has investigated many diseases and designed approaches in engineering to prevent, diagnose and treat pregnancy complications such as preterm birth. Approaches include the development of multi-scale models of transport mechnisms in the placenta, microstructural fracture models of uterine-placental interface delamination, and digital twins of C-section scar pregnancy. At the seminar, Michelle will share her insights on how she leads a multi-disciplinary engineering and women's health community to develop clinical and digital tools to prevent preterm birth.

About the speaker

Michelle Oyen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Wayne State University in Detroit. She began her faculty career in the UK at the University of Cambridge (2006–18). She returned to the US in 2018 and was briefly at East Carolina University and Washington University in St. Louis. Michelle has degrees in Materials Science and Engineering (BS), Engineering Mechanics (MS), and a PhD in Biophysical Sciences.

Presentation will take place at the David Sizer Lecture Theatre, Bancroft building, Mile End Road. Contact Tina Chowdhury, if you would like to “Meet the Speaker” (1400-1600, SEMS seminar room).
