Monday 6th March

10:30-12:00 Compulsory Activity Year 2: IBM presents ‘Design Thinking Workshop’ and Consulting Challenge Kick-Off

  • Where: Virtual - Joining Link: https://ibm.webex.com/meet/j0nnymac
  • Leading Technology company IBM will be hosting a consulting case competition exclusively for SEMS & SPCS students. In this kick-off session, Jon McNamara (IBM Master Inventor and UK University Lead) will be outlining the challenge and then guiding participants through the principles of ‘Design Thinking’ and running a problem solving session where you’ll utilise methods such as ‘Empathy Maps, Ideation and Prioritisation to generate solutions to the challenge. Following this, you’ll receive access to complete All IBM’s Design Thinking Practitioner Badge – an industry recognised qualification
    Participants will then be invited to opt into an optional but highly recommended 'Design Thinking Challenge' which will see you work in multi-disciplinary groups over the course of the week and present their proposed solution back to IBM on March 10th (15:00 – 16:30).

13:00-14:00 Should I do a Masters and how would I apply?

  • Where: iQ East Court, room 0.14 (previously known as Scape)
  • Attend this workshop to find out more about what's involved in Master's degree, get support in deciding if it's the right thing for you to do next and get informed about finding courses and making successful personal statements.

15:50-17:00 How can I 'Ace' Assessment Centres? (Assessment Centre Experience)

  • Where: Arts 217
  • Learn what to expect from assessment centres, as we explore what they may entail and how you're assessed, busting myths and sharing practical ways to prepare. Gain hands-on experience with assessment centre activities. Please only sign up to one of the three A.C.E. workshops. If you are signed to multiple, you will be assigned to one.

Tuesday 7th March

11:00-13:00 Compulsory Activity Year 1: Skills for Engineers Workshop

  • Where: Great Hall
  • In this workshop, students will learn how to develop skills needed for careers in engineering by reflecting on the SEMS Graduate Attributes Framework. This workshop contributes to the Skills for Engineers EMS4099 module, Level 4.

13:00-14:00 How can I make my CV and Covering Letter Stand out?

  • Where: iQ East Court, room 0.14 (previously known as Scape)
  • By the end of this session, participants will have a clear understanding of how employers screen CVs, how to tailor your CV to the role you’re applying for and understand what ‘good evidence’ looks, as well as identify and market your own selling points.

14:30 - 15:30 Employer Event: BAE Digital Intelligence - Looking for the next generation of wireless Engineers

  • Where: iQ East Court, room 0.14 (previously known as Scape)
  • Hungry for a technical challenge? Want a noble and rewarding mission? Enjoy making things or understanding how technology works? If so, come and learn about your future career. From underwater to outer space, work on a wide range of complex problems and develop your skills in areas such electronics, software, signal processing and mathematical modelling.


Wednesday 8th March - SEMS Industrial Liaison Forum

10:00-12:00 SEMS Research Showcase, Temporary Building.

  • There will be poster presentations from BEng and MSc research projects. Please come along to see what current students are working on.

13:00-14:30 Employer panels

  • There will be a series of student panels taking place. The panels will include employers, alumni and current students on placement.
    • Panel session1: Room GC101, Graduate Centre
    • Panel session 2: Room GC201, Graduate Centre
    • Panel session 3: Room 1.13 Bancroft Building.
  • These sessions are a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the potential sectors of employment you may be interested in. There will be an opportunity to learn about the companies internship, placement and graduate schemes! The Panel Sessions are open to all SEMS students but you must register to reserve a place as places are limited.

14:30-15:30 Event: Exploring your career options in the world of Tech

  • Where: Peston LT, Graduate Centre
  • If you’re looking to explore a career in tech, then this is your chance to meet representatives to discover your options in the tech sector. Join us for a panel discussion around emerging themes within the tech industry, talks on AI/Machine Learning & Cloud Engineering and the chance to network with thought leaders (Carlos Carus, Cyrus Mewawalla) and representatives from employers such as Amazon Web Services, Bright Data & Global Data. One not to be missed!

Thursday 9th March

10:30-12:00 Build Your CV Lab!

  • Where: QB PC Lab 212
  • Join us for this very 'hands-on' workshop, where we will be going through the A-Z's of building your CV. We'll be in a pc lab, with the goal of implementing this learning as we go and leave the workshop with a solid template CV.
    By the end of this session, participants will have a clear understanding of how employers screen CVs, how to tailor your CV to the role you’re applying for and understand what ‘good evidence’ looks, as well as identify and market your own unique selling points.

13:00-14:00 How can I interview successfully?

  • Where: iQ East Court, room 0.14 (previously known as Scape)
  • Join us for this workshop on interviewing skills, understanding how Employers assess, what type of questions they ask and why, and how to structure your responses to these, as well as knowing what good ‘evidence’ looks like.

16:00-17:30 How can I 'Ace' Assessment Centres? Online Assessment Centre Experience

  • Where: Online (Joining Link TBC)
  • Learn what to expect from assessment centres, as we explore what they may entail and how you're assessed, busting myths and sharing practical ways to prepare. Gain hands-on experience with assessment centre activities. This is a virtual offering to complement the in-person workshops also running this week. Please only sign up to one of the three A.C.E. workshops. If you are signed to multiple, you will be assigned to one.

Friday 10th March​

QM Enterprise: Working for yourself and developing an entrepreneurial mindset

  • When: 12.00 - 13:00 Where: QB LG1
  • What does it mean to have an entrepreneurial mindset? Are you interested in being your own boss in the STEM sectors? Thought about freelancing or even wondered about setting up your own company?
    Come along to this in-person workshop to understand more about working for yourself, and how QMUL Enterprise can support you, from pitching skills to securing funding.

15:00-16:30 IBM ‘Design Thinking Challenge’ Competition Pitching & Close

  • See listing under Monday 7th March, above, for context. This session will be for those 2nd YR students who signed up to the challenge as presented by IBM earlier in the week. Here you’ll be pitching back to IBM in your groups, on your solution to their challenge.
