Skills and Employability Week

Dates: Monday 8-Friday 12 November 2021

Monday 8th November (Focus on Second Year students)

  • 10:30 - 11:30 – Great Hall – “Value of Work Experience/Industrial Placements”
    This workshop will focus on the benefits of gaining work experience and undertaking an industrial placement during your degree programme, what is often referred to as Experiential Capital. Experiential Capital helps you understand more about what you might like to pursue in your career after graduation and importantly is hugely beneficial to your employability.
  • 12:00 - 13:30 – Great Hall – "Approaching Application Questions" This workshop will focus on understanding what the application process looks like for some of the larger graduate employers (also offering internship and placement opportunities). By understanding what employers are looking for, we’ll look at how best you can reflect this across your CV/Cover Letter/Application form and identify gaps in your skills and experience and how you can address these. We’ll also look at the different ways in which you can gain knowledge to strengthen your applications – with a focus on networking.
  • 13:30 – 15:00 – Great Hall – “Introduction to Professional Bodies and Membership”
    Professional Bodies are the organisations that accredit your degree programme and offer lots of great ways to network and gain information about potential career options in your selected field. If membership is not free, SEMS covers the cost of registration. All SEMS students should be members of at least one Professional Body!

Tuesday 9th November (Focus on First Year students)

  • 11:00- 12:00 – Great Hall – “Assessing your skills, attributes, experience and knowledge”
    This introduction to careers & employability is designed to help you how to explore your career options during your time at university and acquire experience to enable you to meet your career goals post-University, whether that be work, study or launching your own enterprise
  • 13:30 – 15:00 – Great Hall – Engineer the Story
    What you will get out of this session?
    • Awareness of the SEMS Graduate Attributes Framework
    • An understanding of storytelling techniques
    • Awareness of how storytelling techniques can help diversify your career, your research dissemination and improve your marks.
    • Awareness of digital storytelling platforms and how these can create content that can help you improve your communication skills, build networks, and inspire others.
    • A competition to create a short story using onlne social platforms (TikTok, Adobe, Instagram etc)

  • Asynchronous - Introduction to Professional Bodies
    Professional Bodies are the organisations that accredit your degree programme and offer lots of great ways to network and gain information about potential career options in your selected field. If membership is not free, SEMS covers the cost of registration. All SEMS students should be members of at least one Professional Body!

  • 10:00 – 11:00 -Skeel LT - CVs and Cover Letters Workshop
    Whether you’re currently in the process of applying for internship, placement or graduate opportunities or just want a strong CV on hand, join for this session on ‘Crafting your strongest CV’ delivered by Pash Selopal, Careers Consultant at QMUL. By the end of this session, participants will have a clear understanding of how employers screen CVs, how to tailor your CV to the role you’re applying for and understand what ‘good evidence’ looks, as well as identity and market your own selling points.
  • 12:00 – 13:00 - Skeel LT- Preparing for Interviews, Assessment Centres and Psychometric Tests
    Join us for this workshop focusing on preparing for Interviews & Assessment centres, here we’ll be developing an understanding of the different type of interview questions and how to expertly answer these, as well as exploring other stages of typical recruitment & selection processes’ including video interviews and psychometrics tests. This workshop will also demystify assessment centres and incorporate resources and tools that will prepare you for success on the day.

Friday 12th November (Focus on MEng/MSc/PhD students)

  • 10:00 - 12:00 - SEMS Seminar Room - Drop in sessions with SEMS Careers Consultant Pash Selopal
  • 13:00 - 14:00 - Selling Your Research Project (online)
    This session, specifically for individuals who have undertaken a large project component as part of their degree, is designed to help you best ‘sell’ your project in a variety of contexts. Participants will understand the need to articulate your project and research interests, in varied situations and tailored to varied audiences. We’ll be looking at how best to describe your project on application and in professional settings, as well as identifying the soft-skills developed through your research project and how to utilise these in an interview setting.
