Undergraduate engineering students visited Griffon Marine’s shipyard in Portchester on Friday 7th August to present their projects, discuss future collaboration and gain first-hand experience of marine engineering in industry.

During the visit, Morshid Sarker presented his project on offshore aquaculture service vessels, while Amira Montalto and Anton Poon presented their work on water recirculation units. The projects were supervised by Dr Eldad Avital, who also led the visit, with support from PDRA Dr Shuo Mi and PhD student Raima Rahman.

The students toured Griffon Marine’s facilities, seeing several hovercraft under construction and learning about vessel design, manufacturing and marine operations. Technical discussions also explored continuing the collaboration between Queen Mary University of London and Griffon Marine through future MEng and PhD projects in offshore aquaculture. The visit ended with lunch overlooking the bay.

The visit demonstrates the School’s commitment to giving our students opportunities to work on real engineering problems, interact directly with leading industry, and connect their academic studies with engineering practice.

The visit and student activities formed part of the Safe and Sustainable Offshore Aquaculture programme supported by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, the Water Recycling project funded by the Royal Society, and the QMUL STRIDE programme.
