UCL Students Visit Queen Mary's Aerospace Laboratory for Linked Coursework Project
14 November 2025

During Skills and Employability Week, third-year Engineering students from UCL visited our High-Speed Wind Tunnels at the Whitehead Aeronautical Laboratory.
During their visit, the students used the wind tunnel facilities to complete a coursework assignment designed by Dr Fariborz Motallebi from Queen Mary's School of Engineering and Materials Science. Their experiments involved schlieren flow visualisation and pressure measurements to:
- Predict the flow conditions in the supersonic blow-down wind tunnel.
- Estimate the net pressure force acting on a two-dimensional wedge model.
A total of 16 student groups attended the laboratory over the course of the week.
One week prior to the visit, Dr Motallebi gave a lecture at UCL introducing the assignment and covering key health and safety considerations.
Feedback from the visiting students was overwhelmingly positive. Dr Motallebi also expressed his thanks to Joshua Langfield for his assistance during the visit.
