New student walking group for men started
24 October 2025

A new walking group has been started to offer support, companionship and a safe space for all students who identify as men.
Joining a new group can be daunting and anxiety provoking. However, listening to and sharing lived experiences that might be similar to others can be extremely validating and a stark reminder that you might not be alone. It is okay to have differing experiences and to respect these. Groups also provide valuable insight into how we are perceived and how we relate to others around us.
Why is this group solely for men (all those who self-identify as men)?
Men are less prone to showing emotion, appearing vulnerable, seeking help and/or appearing needy because it runs counter to traditional views of masculinity. Therefore, this group provides a rare opportunity for men to meet and discuss these issues whilst connecting with each other in a safe and confidential space.
Why a walking group?
- Low cost, eco-friendly activity that assists in maintaining physical wellbeing and improving mental health
- Low intensity, easily accessible and inclusive
- Not of a competitive nature
- Improves mood and connection with yourself, others and nature
- Mitigates stress, reduces anxiety and rumination
- Provides a sense of achievement and fulfillment
Why talk about men's mental health?
Men are more likely to avoid their problems or pretend that they're fine as a means of coping and self-preservation. When they do reach out, it is typically at the point of crisis or hoping for a quick fix. Some of the leading outcomes of men not seeking help can lead to isolation, depression, alcohol/substance abuse, risky behaviour/gambling and ultimately, death by suicide.
When does it start?
The course will run weekly every Wednesday afternoon for 6 weeks starting on Wednesday 29th October 2025 to Wednesday 10th December 2025 inclusive with a break on Wednesday 19th November. You are expected to attend all six dates to get the most from the course. Please arrive 5-10 minutes early because we will leave promptly for the walk at 3pm.
