9 October 2025

The Royal Society is the world's oldest national scientific academy in continuous existence since its foundation in 1660. The Society's mission is recognise, promote and support excellence in science.
The backbone of the Society is its Fellowship of the most eminent scientists of the day, elected by peer review for life. Members of the Council are the governing body of the Society and are responsible for the policy and management of the Society. To be elected is a mark of esteem and recognition of accomplishment as a scientist.
After receiving all nominations, the society selected a shortlist which included Prof Sir Colin Humphries, Professor of Materials Science at Queen Mary University of London. After a vote by all 1800 Fellows around the world, he was elected.
Prof Humphries said “I am delighted to have been elected to be a member of the Council of The Royal Society, the world's oldest national scientific academy, and I look forward to encouraging the development and use of science for the benefit of humanity.”
