Second annual placements bootcamp a success
11 September 2025

Our second annual placements bootcamp for Engineering and Materials Science students took place last week.
Around 90 students took part in activities across the two days of workshops, which included masterclasses on CVs, cover letters & applications, a session on how to excel at interviewing and a mock assessment centre.
Students were guided by employer representatives from Siemens Mobility, Red Bull Powertrains, AWE and BAE – working with them in group sessions and gaining first-hand insight into what they look for in applicants.
They also heard from other students who had been on placements at companies such as AWE, Cummins and the Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC).
Salma Steadman from AWE was pleased to have attended and met our students, saying: “This was a great day set up by the Careers Team at Queen Mary, who are clearly invested in supporting their students. It was inspiring to see so many engaged students in the room, all focused on absorbing the valuable advice shared by the team and employers on how to succeed in a recruitment process. I hope to see some of these talented individuals applying to our programmes!”
The participating students found it beneficial too, with 100% of 48 students surveyed saying they would recommend the bootcamp to a friend.
The event was organised by Placements Officer Helen Green, with help from Careers Consultant Pash Selopal.
