School of Engineering and Materials Science celebrates NSS 2025 achievements

In the 2025 National Student Survey (NSS), Queen Mary’s School of Engineering and Materials Science recorded strong outcomes, with numerous subject areas performing above sector averages and delivering improvements on previous years.
Student satisfaction was particularly strong in areas highlighting academic challenge and partnership with staff. An exceptional 87.6% of students agreed that their course “challenges you to achieve your best work”, reflecting the School's commitment to academic rigour and student development.
The School also achieved an 80.3% positive score in the Student Voice category, reflecting a growing sense of partnership between students and staff.
Students reported strong satisfaction with how their voices are heard and represented:
- “To what extent do you get the right opportunities to give feedback on your course?” – received 82.5% positive feedback.
- “How free did you feel to express your ideas, opinions, and beliefs?” – received 82% positive feedback.
- “To what extent are students' opinions about the course valued by staff?” – received 80% positive feedback.
Several subject areas within engineering outperformed averages across London, the Russell Group, and the wider UK sector.
Biomedical, Chemical, Sustainable Energy and Mechanical Engineering all achieved 80%+ positive scores for Student Voice, confirming students feel listened to and empowered.
Design, Innovation and Creative Engineering Leads the Way
A standout success came from the BEng/MEng Design, Innovation and Creative Engineering programme, which delivered exceptional results and secured top positions nationally:
- 1st in the UK for Organisation and Management – 100% positive
- 1st in the UK for Student Voice – 95.7% positive
- 2nd in the UK for Academic Support – 100% positive
- 4th in the UK for Teaching – 95.8% positive
- 5th in the UK for Learning Resources – 93.6% positive
The programme also far exceeded sector averages in Learning Opportunities (93.4%) and Assessment and Feedback (90%), cementing its reputation for excellence and innovation in engineering education.
