SEMS alumnus becomes Mayor of Haringey

Queen Mary School of Engineering and Materials Science alumnus Ahmed Mabub has recently been elected Mayor of Haringey.
After spending a year as Deputy Mayor, Ahmed was elected into the full civic role in May. He is making history as the first Mayor of the Borough of Bangladeshi heritage.
Ahmed was at Queen Mary for his undergraduate and postgraduate studies, gaining a BEng in Materials Science and finally graduating with a distinction in Biomaterials MSc in 2020. During his time here he was also president of Queen Mary Student Union after holding Officer roles during his undergraduate degree studies.
Ahmed has worked in both Haringey and Kensington & Chelsea councils since starting a Graduate Programme in 2021, he is now Policy Analyst at the Bank of England.
A lifelong resident of Haringey, Ahmed praised it’s “beautiful mosaic of backgrounds” saying it “doesn't just make Haringey unique – it makes us resilient, innovative and deeply compassionate.
As we face the challenges of our time together, it is this diversity that provides us with countless perspectives and solutions, ensuring that no voice goes unheard and no community feels forgotten.”
