Biomedical Engineering Alumni wins British Council award
6 May 2025

Asad Aslam, who completed an MSc in Biomedical Engineering in 2016, won the British Council Study UK Alumni award for Business and Innovation. They praised his work saying "his innovation will help reduce mortality and currently serves 15,950 preterm babies".
In a vibrant career as a biomedical engineer since graduating, Asad co-founded a start up using AI to pioneer incubators for babies in his home country of Pakistan.
The award also applauds his work for “expanding green tech to lower middle-income countries and war-torn regions with potential UN support, aiming to serve humanity.”
“We are planning to use solar panels and other energy resources in the rural areas where electricity is a major issue,” says Asad.
“Our products also use led ultraviolet light in our phototherapy lights system to lower the energy needs and temperature control.”
The incubators are produced locally, reducing transport emissions and supporting local industry. Unlike a lot of modern tech, the product is easily repaired and upgraded and can be controlled through apps.
Asad credits his time at Queen Mary for inspiring his idea, saying, "the time that I spent studying at Queen Mary changed my perspective and thinking about my life. I learnt leadership skills, character building and developed the idea for my startup whilst studying there."
We spoke to Asad about his memories of Queen Mary and his career so far, on the Student Stories pages of our website.
