Materials student secures highly competitive internship at CERN
3 April 2025

Michaela Lastovickova, a third-year Materials Science and Engineering student and standout researcher at the Queen Mary Centre for Undergraduate Research (QMCUR), has earned a place in CERN’s prestigious Summer Student Programme - an extraordinary achievement, with the programme receiving over 10,000 applications from around the world.
With a strong passion for radiation detectors and subatomic particle interactions, Michaela distinguished herself through exceptional research and dedication, securing a spot in one of the most competitive scientific opportunities available to undergraduates.
CERN - the world’s largest particle physics laboratory, based in Geneva, Switzerland - is renowned for its groundbreaking work with the Large Hadron Collider and its contributions to fundamental science.
The paid summer programme, which runs from June to August, offers an intensive schedule of expert-led lectures and hands-on research projects. It will provide Michaela with a unique opportunity to deepen her expertise and gain real-world experience at the cutting edge of particle physics.
As Michaela prepares to graduate this summer, QMCUR is hopeful she will remain an active part of its research community, continuing to build on her impressive work and fostering new collaborations as she advances in her academic journey.
