DICE students celebrate ten years of Hackmasters
8 January 2025
Students from the Design Innovation and Creative Engineering programme were invited to celebrate ten years of Hackmasters, taking part in their 10X Innovation Hack.
Taking place at The Ministry in Borough on 14th and 15th November, the event was a hands-on exploration of the challenges and opportunities in these evolving fields posed by the prevalent existence of AI.
Across two days, the participants considered challenges for protecting music rights against the rise of AI-produced music, how AI can be used to promote sustainable fashion and using AI to predict music preferences for advertising. They also designed an experience to accompany Breggz bespoke headphones.
The DICE students who took part were Ayana Bazzy, Nicolas Gil Arboli, Carl Hastings, Liyana Iqbal, Nadia Ismail Mohammad, Adibul Meah, Ella Miller, Rahul Patel, Emir Savas and Matthew Su.
They worked alongside experts from industry such as Innovation Designer Sabina Weiss and AI expert Andrew Grant as well as collaborating with students from Portsmouth University, Oxford Brookes University and University of the Arts London.
Hackmasters said "It’s always about the talent, not the technology and the abundance of talent QMUL students and grads bring is simply second to none."
DICE Programme Director Dr Karen Shoop said “The aim was to provide the students with an authentic, fast-paced, live industry focus early on in their year-long group project with industry. It was amazing to see how far their work - based on their explorations before the hack - progressed in the two-day hack.”
